This fall, Burlington will once again hold an annual celebration of literature. The Green Mountain Book Festival, a newly minted nonprofit, will bring authors and readers to the Queen City's downtown from September 23 through 25. Headlined by Ruth Ozeki.

The Literary Cocktail Hour is an fun, informal monthly event featuring a pair (or more) of speakers in an entertaining, illuminating virtual event that opens with cocktails! On Friday, December 10, The Brattleboro Literary Festival concludes its 20th anniversary year with a very special Literary Cocktail Hour at 7:00 pm featuring Ruth Ozeki.

Ruth Ozeki’s The Book of Form and Emptiness: A Novel follows 13-year-old Benny Oh, who, a year after his father’s death, begins to hear voices. They belong to random objects scattered within his home – a sneaker, a broken Christmas ornament, a piece of wilted lettuce – but in time, also a book, one that narrates his life and teaches him to listen to the things that truly matter. Moderated by Neda Ulaby, NPR arts desk reporter.

Novelist, filmmaker and Zen Buddhist priest Ruth Ozeki, best known for My Year of Meats and the Booker short-listed A Tale for the Time Being, beams in from Connecticut to talk about her latest novel, The Book of Form and Emptiness, with Liz Grant. Touching on the importance of reading, the strangeness of consumer culture, and resilience and grief, it was described by David Mitchell as a ‘compassionate novel of life, love and loss [which] glows in the dark. Its strange, beautiful pages turn themselves’.

Live from Powell’s Books with the theme “Hidden Worlds.” This evening will feature Julia Cooke (Come Fly the World: The Jet-Age Story of the Women of Pan Am), Ruth Ozeki (The Book of Form and Emptiness), Dave Miller (host of Think Out Loud), Atsuro Riley (Heard-Hoard), and David Biespiel.

This summer, One Story will offer our annual conference for fiction writers online. Twenty-four conference participants will be divided into three intimate eight-student workshop cohorts, each of which will be led by one of our workshop instructors.

Each talk by a guest writer focuses on a specific element—such as dialogue, metaphor, voice, or structure—that should be in every writer’s toolbox.
